" Gonzo Ramen, a family owned and operated izakaya-style restaurant, offers authentic Japanese soul food in the heart of the Village. The Murphy family launched its new venture on March 4, 2020--the same day Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in California. Although the timing could have been better, owners Mika and Jamison Murphy, along with their sons Justin, Jake, Jeff, are managing to keep their dream alive despite this past year's challenges.

The mouthwatering menu offers three types of ramen with custom noodles and house-made broths: Gonzo Black (black garlic oil over tonkotsu ramen), Gonzo Red (spicy chili oil over miso ramen) and Gonzo Green (vegan ramen). Customer favorites also include Chicken Karaage, Pork and Chicken Gyoza and Spicy Garlic Edamame. Wash down your delicious meal with a refreshing Japanese beer, or if you're feeling adventurous, order a unique sake bomb experience.

The family-friendly space in the Village Faire center emcompasses indoor and outdoor seating, vintage Japanese decor and a festive, social atmosphere. Currently, Gonzo Ramen is offering takeout and outdoor dining options.

Although it hasn't been an entirely smooth ride, the Murphys continue to look forward. Justin, the general manager, attributes much of the family's success to adaptability. He also describes his family's spirit of "Gonzo Journalism" a style of experience-based narrative attributed to Hunter S. Thompson. "Gonzo" means outlandishly unconventional, bizarre or crazy.

"On the precarious rollercoaster ride of opening a new restaurant in the midst of a pandemic, I quote Hunter S. Thompson: 'Buy the ticket, take the ride," says Justin. "
